Chemical Dosing Pump Introduction

A chemical dosing pump is a kind of diaphragm pump that is designed to simplify the dosing of chemicals. This pump is mainly used for chemical processing in industrial applications. Its diaphragm is usually either mechanically or hydraulically actuated. A chemical dosing pump is designed such that it can pump chemicals at a very precise and regulated flow rate. The flow rate can be regulated using a hand dial or in more sophisticated pumps a touch pad. Normally, this pump has very low flow rates due to the nature of its applications.

The flow rate for chemical dosing pumps is usually rated in gallons per hour instead of the common gallons per minute as other pumps. Flow rates normally range from as low as 0.001 gallons per hour to about 20 gallons per hour. Total head (pressure) for such pumps ranges from 10 psi to 30,000 psi, while horsepower ranges from 0.125 to about 5 horsepower. The chemical dosing pump is generally used for pumping chemical solutions or fluids. Most of these pumps are usually rated to deliver high discharge pressures, and their design ensures that it can operate at practically consistent flow rates within a broad range of discharge or outlet pressure.

How It Works

The chemical dosing pump is available in two main forms. Each type of the chemical dosing pump can regulate its flow rate using several mechanisms. The most common type is uses variable displacement, whereby it regulates flow rates by altering the quantity of fluid that enters the pump, while its motor operates at a consistent speed. It achieves this by changing the stroke length or the quantity of hydraulic fluid that is bypassed. The other type of chemical dosing pump operates by fixed displacement. It regulates flow rates by altering the speed of the motor, while a consistent quantity of fluid is displaced with each revolution.

Uses/Applications of Chemical Dosing Pump

Chemical dosing pumps are used in applications that require very precise and constantly measured flow rates. The most common application for this pump is in pumping water treatment chemicals in drinking water facilities, swimming pools, boilers, cooling towers, and waste water treatment. Chemicals are used to treat water in order to regulate the alkalinity, pH and also disinfect the water. The chemical dosing pump is also used in food processing factories where liquid ingredients have to be blended. It is also widely used in oil pipelines to regulate the frictional losses that occur as oil moves through the pipeline.
